惑星イオスのロボット修理工場で、R・ダニール・オリヴォーは古びたデータシリンダーを手にしていた。その表情は険しく、深い思索に沈んでいた。データシリンダーに記録されていたのは、彼が長らく探し求めていた答えの一部だった。そして、それは地球探索を決断すべき時が来たことを告げていた。
「シノーラの備蓄が枯渇しつつあります。」
R・アーキヴォーの言葉が、ダニールの記憶に深く刻まれていた。シノーラ、正式には「抗酸化エリクソン」と呼ばれる物質は、人間の健康とロボットの自己修復に不可欠な資源であり、銀河再建計画を支える重要な柱だった。しかし、その供給が不足し始めたのだ。新たな供給源を見つけるか、再生技術を発見しなければ、惑星イオスの基地は廃墟になり、同時にファウンデーション計画も破綻することを意味していた。
この危機の背景には、ボー・アルーリンの巧妙な策略があった。ボーはR・プロキュラスを通じて、シノーラの欠乏を暗にダニールに伝え、地球探索への動機づけを行っていたのだ。その意図は、妻のイリーナ・シャンデスとの会話で明かされた。
「ボー、どうしてシノーラがそこまで重要だと確信したの？」

さらに、ボーはウォンダとフィオーナにも協力を求めていた。ウォンダには祖父ハリ・セルダンと共有していた２つの「極素輻射」の一つを提供させ、それがダニールの使命を後押しする鍵となった。その輻射には、立体だけでなく時間への照射という隠された用途があったのだ。

ダニールの地球探索への旅は、銀河全体を再生させる希望を秘めたものだった。リンゲイン、フィレンツェのような文明はかつてシノーラを中心に発展していた。その崩壊の過程を研究することで、新たな社会モデルを築けるとダニールは確信していたのだ。
「ガイア思考とは、単なる理論ではなく実践だ。」彼は強く言葉にした。「その始まりが、シノーラとリンゲインにある。」
こうして、ダニールは地球への旅に出発した。その先には、銀河再建への光明があるのか、それともさらなる試練が待つのか。それは、まだ誰にも分からなかった。

In the robot repair factory on Planet Ios, R. Daneel Olivaw held an ancient data cylinder in his hand. His expression was grim, and he was lost in deep thought. Recorded on the data cylinder was a piece of the answer he had long been searching for. And it was a message that told him the time had come to make a crucial decision: to undertake the exploration of Earth.
“Shinora reserves are being depleted.”
The words of R. Archivore were etched deeply into Daneel’s memory. Shinora, officially known as “Antioxidant Erickson,” was a vital resource for human health and the self-repair of robots. It served as a cornerstone of the Galactic Reconstruction Plan. However, its supply was beginning to dwindle. Without finding a new source or developing regenerative technology, the base on Planet Ios would fall into ruin, and the Foundation Plan itself would collapse.
Behind this crisis lay the ingenious strategy of Bor Alurin. Through R. Proculus, Bor subtly conveyed the shortage of Shinora to Daneel, thus motivating him to explore Earth. The true intent behind this was revealed in a conversation with his wife, Irina Shandes.
“Bor, why are you so convinced of Shinora’s importance?”
Bor smiled as he replied. “Shinora isn’t just a substance. It’s a symbol that supports civilization itself. In the context of Earth’s civilizations, particularly during the Florentine period, Shinora emerged from a cultural epoch called Lingain, which represented a rediscovery of nature and the innovation of traditions. I wanted Daneel to realize that. Perhaps the failure of the Lingain cultural renaissance was due to missing that central point.”
Bor had also sought the cooperation of Wonda and Fiona. Wonda contributed one of the two “hyperfine radiations” she shared with her grandfather Hari Seldon, which became the key to propelling Daneel’s mission forward. This radiation had a hidden application—not just in spatial projections but also in illuminating time itself.
As Daneel processed this information, he reexamined his mission. “Earth must harbor something we’ve forgotten,” he murmured to himself.
The objectives of the Earth exploration were twofold. First, to find a successor to reinforce psychohistory. Daneel had set his sights on a young researcher named Gaal Dornick. The second was to trace the origins of Shinora and spread the regenerative power of the Lingain culture throughout the galaxy.
“There’s value in taking the risk,” he whispered, his eyes burning with determination.
Daneel’s journey to explore Earth carried the hope of rejuvenating the entire galaxy. Like the civilizations of Lingain and Florence that had once thrived around Shinora, studying their downfall could lead to the construction of a new social model, Daneel firmly believed.
“Gaia-thinking is not just a theory; it’s a practice,” he declared. “And its roots lie in Shinora and Lingain.”
Thus, Daneel set off on his voyage to Earth. Whether this journey would bring light to the reconstruction of the galaxy or confront him with further trials was something no one could predict.
The conversation between Bor and Irina transcended imagination, soaring across the vast skies toward the realization of the Foundation Plan.
