ドーラ・ドナックは、なぜか、ジル・エフォーラムの次女スーを養娘と申し出た。なぜかと書いたが—正確には違う。スーは幼い頃からそうなると知っていた。理由ではなく、事実として、体の奥に刻まれていた。
「ネオ・エーテルが銀河連邦の辺境、マンダマン星域のさらに外縁に置かれた理由を、私はずっと考えてきた。
１００ほどの島が点在する、海ばかりの惑星。めぼしい資源はなく、換金できる作物もなく、他星との交流も断たれた隔絶の地。移住させられた１０万の人々は、ただ生き延びることに全力を注ぐしかなかった。
だが今では分かる—だからこそ、ここが選ばれたのだ。
貧しく、目立たず、誰にも怪しまれない惑星。アーカイヴの創始者ラムダ・グリスとクロノ・ブルーマーたちが、その透明さを見込んで設計した場所。もっとも実際にネオ・エーテルへ辿り着いたのは、義祖父ヒュー・ドナックと奇行師シャウ・リーガルの二人だけだったと聞いている。ラムダ・グリス自身は、ついにこの星の土を踏まなかった。
実の父ジル・エフォーラムは、その土台の上で着実に動いた。ラムダとも、ヒューとも直接の面識はなかったはずだ。それでも父は、都モーヴ大学でシャウ・リーガルに師事し、クロノ・ブルームの理を学んだ。シャウを介して、ラムダとヒューの意志は父へと流れ込んだ——面識なき継承として。
父が手本としたのは、シャウの教えと、ヒューの故郷の星ナックセルの在り方だった。ナックセルもまた、人類発祥の星の東に浮かぶ小さな島—ノドの移住者たちが築いた世界だ。辺境に辺境を重ねた、その静かな連鎖。ネオ・エーテルは、その連鎖の最新の環だった。
マンダマン星域が銀河連邦から独立するや、ネオ・エーテルはその空白を間髪入れず掌握した。かつてマンダマンの傘下に置かれていた惑星が、今や自ら動く側に回った。長年の準備が、ようやく形になった瞬間だった。
しかし、安堵するには早い。
銀河はいま、秩序を失いつつある。退廃と無秩序のただ中で、次に何が来るか、誰にも分からない。アーカイヴがそれを乗り越えられるかどうか—私には、まだ確信が持てない。

The Ark of the Archive
For reasons few could understand, Dora Donack asked to adopt Sue, the second daughter of Jill Eforum.
Or rather—that is not entirely accurate.
Sue had known, ever since she was a child, that this would happen.
Not as an explanation, but as an undeniable fact engraved deep within her being.
“For years I wondered why Neo Aether had been established on the very edge of the Mandaman Sector, itself a remote frontier of the Galactic Federation.
A world of endless oceans scattered with nearly one hundred islands. It possessed no valuable resources, no profitable crops, and almost no contact with other planets. The one hundred thousand settlers who arrived there had no choice but to devote themselves entirely to survival.
But now I understand.
That was precisely why this world was chosen.
Poor. Invisible. Too insignificant to attract suspicion.
It was a place designed by the founders of the Archive—Lambda Griss and the Chrono Bloomers—who recognized the strength hidden in such transparency.
In truth, however, only my adoptive grandfather Hugh Donack and the eccentric scholar Shau Regal ever reached Neo Aether. I have heard that Lambda Griss himself never once set foot upon its soil.
My biological father, Jill Eforum, steadily built upon that foundation. He probably never met either Lambda or Hugh in person. Even so, at Mauve University he studied under Shau Regal and learned the principles of Chrono Bloom. Through Shau, the will of Lambda and Hugh flowed into my father—a succession without direct acquaintance.
The model my father followed was Shau’s teaching and the society of Hugh’s homeworld, Nackcel. Nackcel too was a small island world east of humanity’s birthplace, founded by migrants from Nodo. Frontier upon frontier—a quiet chain stretching through history. Neo Aether became the newest link in that chain.
The moment the Mandaman Sector declared independence from the Galactic Federation, Neo Aether moved without hesitation to fill the resulting vacuum. The planet once subordinate to Mandaman had become one that acted on its own initiative. It was the culmination of preparations that had lasted for generations.
Yet it is too soon to feel relieved.
The galaxy is steadily losing its order.
Amid growing decadence and chaos, no one knows what will come next.
Whether the Archive can survive what lies ahead…
I still cannot say with certainty.
I hope my adoptive mother Dora’s fears prove to be nothing more than needless anxiety. There would be no happier outcome than if the Second Codex—the Consureum—never needed to awaken.
And yet—
Something has already begun to move.
Somewhere beyond my knowledge.”
