涙の黒い太陽

エルマの妹のリセルは、その場所を訪れた経緯を、その日のうちに惑星ペリラにいる母ネッラへ手紙にしたためていた。

なぜかリセルの夢に祖母ドーラが現れ、不思議な一連の作法とともに、新設された公園のある場所を訪れるよう告げたのだった。

これは奇妙な出来事であった。後に判明したことだが、ジョン・ナックの『歴史思想書』なる書籍はその図書館には存在せず、リセルが目にした「涙の黒い太陽」の像も、翌日には跡形もなく消えていた。惑星ネオ・エーテルの人々は、誰一人としてそのことを知らなかった——後の時代にベリー・エコーによって発見されるまでは。

「もう十分、読者は理解できたであろう結論を再確認しておこう。要するに、科学の進歩が人類の想像力の範囲を一歩でも踏み越えた瞬間、それは危険極まりないものとなり、自らに破滅をもたらすのである。ノドが選民と呼ばれることを嫉妬したある民族は、すでに獲得されていた原子力の理論を盗み、その事実を闇に葬ろうとした。二度の原子爆弾投下という、戦争終結という美名のもとで暴走したのは、極めて少数の意志によるものであった。

ノドとは現地語で『放浪者・追放者』を意味する。皮肉にも、ノドの民は人類の歴史においてただ一度、原爆を投下された民であり、その痛みを知る唯一の民族である。嫉妬とは、人間の醜い奇形を生む悪魔に他ならない。諸君、そのことを最後の警句として、この書を閉じることとする。」

惑星ペリラでの暮らしはいかがですか？こちらは一人でも大丈夫ですので、どうかご安心ください。

実はこちらで不思議な出来事がありましたので、お手紙を書きました。ご心配には及びません。

昨夜の夢に、お祖母さまのドーラが現れました。「図書館でジョン・ナックの本を読んでから、例の公園の場所へ行くのですよ。家に咲いているジンジャーの花を髪に挿してね」とおっしゃるのです。

言われた通りにしてその場所へ行くと、昨日まではなかったはずの、丸い黒い顔の像が土に埋まっていました。手をかざすと黒い部分が黄金に輝き、見たことのない文字が浮かび上がってきたのです。不思議なことに、その文章の意味がすんなりと理解できました。内容は次の通りです。

『我らはノド人。惑星ナックセルを経由し、ここ銀河の果てまでやってきた。
放射能の悲惨さを忘れぬために、この「涙の黒い太陽」の像を埋める。
我らが惑星エアルトのノドを離れ宇宙へ飛び出したのは、空が放射能に覆われて光を遮られ、四十日ものあいだ太陽を見ることができなかったからだ。
その教訓をここに刻む。記念として別紫蘇（ラヴェンダー）の種を撒いていく。
宇宙が蘇る、その礎を開く時が来るであろう。
そしてひとり、惑星ナックセル出身の青年がその意味を理解するであろう。』

その青年とは、いったい誰なのでしょう。

萌葱色の霧雨が降り、大地は霞んでいました。公園には泉のせせらぎと小鳥のさえずりだけが響き、空には虹がかかっていました。

今日の不思議な出来事に、しばし物思いに耽っていました。お姉さんのエルマは今頃どうしているのかしら、などと考えていた、その時——誰かに見られているような気配を、ふと感じたのです。

The Black Sun of Tears

Elma’s younger sister, Risel, wrote a letter that same day to her mother, Nella, who lived on the planet Perila, describing how she came to visit that place.
For some reason, Risel had a dream in which her grandmother Dora appeared. Along with a series of mysterious rituals, she instructed Risel to visit the location of a newly built park.

It was an uncanny event. As was later discovered, a book titled Historical Thought by John Nack did not exist in that library, and the statue of the “Black Sun of Tears” that Risel had seen had vanished without a trace the following day. No one on the planet Neo-Aether knew anything about it—until it was later uncovered by Berry Echo in a much later era.

“Let us reaffirm a conclusion that readers should already have understood. In short, the moment scientific progress steps even one inch beyond the limits of human imagination, it becomes extremely dangerous and brings about its own destruction. A certain people, envious of being called the Chosen of Nod, stole the already established theory of atomic energy and attempted to bury that fact in darkness. What came to be glorified as the end of the war through the dropping of two atomic bombs was, in reality, the result of the will of an extremely small number of individuals.

Nod, in the local tongue, means ‘wanderers’ or ‘exiles.’ Ironically, the people of Nod are the only ethnic group in human history to have been subjected to an atomic bombing, and thus the only ones who truly understand its pain. Envy is nothing less than a demonic distortion that breeds the ugliness within humanity. Gentlemen, let this be the final warning as we close this book.”

To Mother Nella
How is life on the planet Perila? I am doing well on my own here, so please do not worry.
I am writing because something strange happened here, though there is no need for concern.

Last night, I dreamed of my grandmother Dora. She said to me, “After reading John Nack’s book in the library, go to the location of that park. And wear the ginger flowers blooming at home in your hair.”
When I followed her instructions and went to that place, I found what should not have been there the day before: a statue with a round black face, half-buried in the earth. When I placed my hand over it, the black surface turned golden, and unfamiliar characters appeared.
Strangely, I understood their meaning immediately. The message was as follows:

“We are the people of Nod. We arrived here at the edge of the galaxy via the planet Nacksell.
To never forget the tragedy of radiation, we buried this ‘Black Sun of Tears’ as a monument.

We left our home planet, Eart Nod, and ventured into space because the sky had been covered in radiation, blocking out the sun, and we were unable to see daylight for forty days.

We inscribe this as a lesson. As a memorial, we have planted seeds of betsushiso (lavender).
There will come a time when the cosmos is reborn, and its foundations will be opened.

And one day, a young man from the planet Nacksel will understand its meaning.”
Who could that young man possibly be?

A misty rain of pale green fell, and the land lay veiled in haze. Only the murmuring of a spring and the songs of birds echoed through the park, while a rainbow arched across the sky.
As I was lost in thought about today’s mysterious events, wondering what my sister Elma might be doing at this moment, I suddenly felt as though someone was watching me.
