「確かにあのとき、あの小さい島全体輝いて、エルマがその光に包まれるのを見た。目撃した。そのとき以来、それまでになかった感覚、もしかしてずっと以前にはあったような感覚に気がついた。戻ったというのが正しいのかも。ホモジェミーさんと再会したあと、スペースワゴンで目覚める間、怪力の女性に担がれていた。そして今、あの少女を見た瞬間、エルマが包まれたとき以上の強い光を見た。きっと、エルマが言っていた彼女の妹に違いない。少しずつわかって来たぞ。きっと、エルマとスティルバーはラムダの面倒を看るためだけに惑星リリナスに残ったのではないのだな！ラムダとホモジェミーのなにかしらの計らいなのだろう。そうだ。エルマがつい口から漏らした言葉を思い出した。『星界の涯』だ。惑星ネオ・エーテルではないということなのか。それはなんのためなのか？これ以上は、もう問うてはならないかもしれないというのか。

あの光は、本物だった。
あの小さな島全体が輝いた瞬間、エルマがその光に包まれていくのを、ヒューは確かに目撃した。夢でも幻覚でもない。彼の目が、はっきりと捉えていた。
そしてあの瞬間から、何かが変わった。
それまで感じたことのない感覚が、ヒューの内側に芽生えていた。いや――正確には「芽生えた」のではないかもしれない。ずっと以前には確かにあったはずの何かが、戻ってきたのだ。
記憶を辿れば、不思議な出来事が連なっていた。
ホモジェミーと再会したあの日。スペースワゴンの中で目覚めたとき、彼は怪力の女性に担がれていた。そして今日――あの少女を見た瞬間、ヒューは息を呑んだ。
エルマが包まれたあの光以上の、強烈な輝きを見た。
きっと、エルマの妹、リセルだ。
リセル・グリス。エルマが名を口にしていた、あの妹に違いない。
少しずつ、霧が晴れてきた気がした。
ヒューは考えた。エルマとスティルバーが惑星リリナスに残ったのは、ただラムダの面倒を看るためだけではなかったのではないか。その裏に、ラムダとホモジェミーの何らかの意図が働いているのではないか。
そう考えたとき、エルマがふと口から漏らしたあの言葉が、脳裏に蘇った。
「星界の涯」。
惑星ネオ・エーテルではない、どこか。それはいったい何のための場所なのか。何のために、その名が囁かれたのか。
――いや。
これ以上は、問うてはならないのかもしれない。
そんな予感が、静かに胸をよぎった。
だが今、ヒューの心を占めていたのは謎でも推論でもなかった。
もう一度、あの少女に会いたい。
リセル・グリス。
そして、エルマから託された紫色に輝くシリンダーを、彼女の手に渡すことだ。エルマ自身が名付けたその水――
「ベニ・サラの水」のそのうちの紫色のものを。

That light had been real.
At the moment the entire small island began to glow, Hugh had clearly seen Elma being wrapped within its radiance. It had not been a dream, nor a hallucination. His own eyes had witnessed it unmistakably.
And from that moment onward, something changed.
A sensation unlike anything he had ever known began to awaken within him. Or rather—perhaps “awaken” was not the right word. It felt as though something that had once existed deep inside him long ago had finally returned.
As he traced his memories, a chain of strange events emerged.
The day he reunited with Homojemy. When he awoke inside the space wagon, he found himself being carried by a woman of extraordinary strength. And today—the instant he saw that young girl, Hugh caught his breath.
He had witnessed a brilliance even more intense than the light that had enveloped Elma.
It had to be Elma’s younger sister.
Risel Griss. The very sister whose name Elma had spoken. There could be no doubt.
Little by little, it felt as though the fog was lifting.
Hugh reflected. Perhaps Elma and Stilber had remained on the planet Lilinas for reasons beyond simply caring for Lambda. Perhaps behind it all lay some intention shared by Lambda and Homojemy.
As that thought crossed his mind, a phrase Elma had once let slip returned vividly to his memory.
“The Edge of the Stellar Realm.”
Somewhere that was not the planet Neo-Aether. But what kind of place was it? For what purpose had that name been spoken?
—No.
Perhaps these were questions he was not meant to ask.
The feeling drifted quietly through his heart.
Yet at that moment, Hugh’s thoughts were occupied not by mysteries or speculation.
He wanted to see that girl once more.
Risel Griss.
And he wanted to place into her hands the three luminous cylinders entrusted to him by Elma—violet, one of three colors, transparent, violet, and golden.
The water that Elma herself had named—
“The Water of Beni-Sara.”
