Five hundred years from then, we will finally understand who this mutant really was.

  1. Four-Leaf Clovers

“And this is my conclusion. You will probably not understand it at all — and yet, each and every one of you is the Earth itself. Possessed of the power of self-purification. Capable of creating new life. You know it well, do you not? Forgive a person seventy times seven. This teaches us that tolerance is boundless. And that life is eternal.”
— The Historical Philosophical Writings of John Knack

The mission had been completed without incident.

Sheltered beneath the curtain of a radiation-defense shield, the two of them pressed their feet into the desolate soil of Earth. Hugh gazed dimly at the landscape of Planet Ealt, his eyes growing wide as he watched Elma running about and playing. It was as though the other mission had slipped entirely from his mind.

What he did remember, however, was Elma — overcome with joy at the discovery of water welling up from a crack in the ground, eagerly gathering it into her hands. And around that spring, clover grew in dense, lush clusters.

— Could this be what one might call the life of regeneration?

“Thank you so much for your cooperation, Mr. Credit Bag.”

Elma said softly, cradling the vessel of gathered water in her arms. The excitement had not yet faded from her eyes.

“Even so — I was astonished. This entire planet is saturated with radiation, and yet this water alone was completely uncontaminated. And the fact that the whole island was blanketed in clover……I cannot help but find it strange.”

She gazed at the surface of the water for a moment, then continued quietly.

“I’m going to divide this water into three portions and carry them to where they need to go. The first — to Askshion on Planet Lilinas. The second — to the newborn planet where the companions of Mr. Homogene now dwell. And the third — this is what I’d like to ask of you. Please deliver it to Planet Neo-Ether, the world where my sister lives, the star where grandfather’s companions are making their new home.”

Then, as if suddenly remembering, she lifted her face.

“Oh — and there was a four-leaf clover, too!”

Elma placed a single leaf upon her palm and gazed at it intently.

“I think I’ve come to understand the meaning of this clover. The meaning carried by its three leaves — perhaps they all point to one and the same thing. Each person stands as an individual, holding a pride that belongs to them alone. And yet, perhaps it is within the act of living together with others that true happiness is found.”

She smiled, with just a touch of shyness.

“……Or perhaps that’s just my imagination running away with me.”

To be continued.
