少し前、母リセル・グリスの遺品を整理していた時、叔母エルマ・グリスが八歳の頃の写真を見つけた。
ラムダが精神感応能力に気づいた頃で、彼女は終日、輻射キューブに夢中だったという。

薄暗い回廊に、静かな足音だけが響いていた。

窓の外では、恒星の淡い光が銀河港を照らしている。

扉が開く。

入ってきた男を見た瞬間、ラムダは顔を上げた。

「……チェス・ホモジェミー。」

だが、その名を口にしたあと、彼は小さく首を振る。

「いや――ノヴェル・ミライ。」

チェスは否定も肯定もせず、静かに立っていた。
その沈黙だけで、ラムダには十分だった。

「ラムダ。君にとって残念な知らせを持ってきた。」

低く落ち着いた声が、部屋の空気をさらに冷やす。

「サンタンニの騒乱についてだ。」

その言葉が発せられた瞬間、ラムダは目を閉じた。

「……もう、それ以上言わないでくれ。」

彼の声には、疲弊と諦念が滲んでいた。

「わかっている。アルケーのことなのだろう。」

長い沈黙。

ラムダはゆっくり椅子から立ち上がり、窓の外の星海へ背を向けたまま呟いた。

「君は私にとって死神なのか。」

その声は責めるでもなく、ただ運命を確認するようだった。

「失われていく者たちの報せを、いつも君が運んでくる。」

チェスは何も答えない。

ラムダは続けた。

「……もう残っているのはエルマだけだ。」

彼の脳裏に、小さな少女の面影が浮かぶ。
地球の草花を知る、最後の継承者。

だが、その希望ですら遠ざかりつつあった。

「そのエルマですら、最近では同じ感応者のスティルバー・プルプラと行動を共にしている。」

星々の運命は、少しずつ彼の手を離れていく。

するとチェスは、わずかに表情を和らげた。

「――もう一つの方は、良い知らせだ。」

ラムダが振り返る。

「消息不明だった第七アポリアナ号は、惑星サイパインへ到達していた。」

その言葉に、ラムダの瞳が微かに揺れた。

「その後、彼女たちは惑星ペリラで無事に暮らしている。」

部屋の空気が、ほんの少しだけ柔らかくなる。

チェスは静かに歩み寄り、窓辺に立った。

遠い銀河の光が、彼の横顔を淡く照らす。

「これから私は、彼女たちを惑星ネオ・エーテルへ連れて行く。」

その声音には、珍しく穏やかな響きがあった。

そしてチェスは、静かに微笑した。

「――それで構わないな、ラムダ？」

ラムダはしばらく答えなかった。

やがて彼は、深い疲労を抱えたまま、小さく頷いた。

その頷きは、承認というより――
もはや誰にも抗えない時代そのものへの、静かな降伏のようだった。

そしてその時、 ヒューはまだ知らなかった。
